Transitioning into managing trusts involves learning how to administer them correctly. Operating in the trust world requires adapting to a new set of rules, different from the generally accepted accounting principles familiar to most business owners. It's essential to avoid mixing of business or personal funds with trust funds. Treating the trust as its own entity, complete with a separate credit card and debit card, simplifies management significantly.
As your assets and wealth grow, it becomes crucial to update your structure and setup, providing protection for your company and family against unforeseen dangers. Scaling your company often means outgrowing your existing team(legal & taxes) and updating processes and procedures.
Many often wonder how to kick off a business from their trust without revealing the trust's name. It's a valid concern since broadcasting the trust's name might not be the best strategy. One crucial lesson I like to impart is to avoid directly using your trust's name when starting a business.
The simplest approach is to secure a Doing Business As (DBA) name. You can opt for an LLC and partner it with the trust. However, if the business generates passive income, creating a DBA that the trust owns is an effective option. When applying for the DBA, you won't be the owner; instead, the trust will own it. As the trustee, you are essentially creating a DBA for the trust, allowing you to operate the business seamlessly.
This setup also enables the trust to open a separate bank account, maintaining a clear separation from the primary trust account. By understanding and implementing this straightforward approach, you can navigate the process of starting a business from your trust while maintaining the privacy and integrity of your trust's name.
